Kentucky NSF EPSCoR Research Scholars Program (RSP)
KY NSF EPSCoR is accepting applications for the RSP. The program seeks to support the research involvement of outstanding students who are underrepresented in science majors. Women, racial/ethnic minoritiesi, the disabled, and students from Appalachian Kentucky countiesii are encouraged to participate. Students enrolled at any Kentucky post-secondary institution are eligible to apply.
Interested students can receive up to $5,000 per calendar year to support their involvement in the research of the KY NSF EPSCoR initiative areas. The award must be used to directly support the student (via wages, stipends, travel, supplies, or some other direct form of support). The proposed budget and activities are at the discretion of the mentor faculty. KY NSF EPSCoR has a wide breadth of S&T focus areas, which include: advanced materials, cellular and molecular engineering platforms, micro/nano technology, ecological genomics, environmental science and economic development through student research. Students must be nominated by a mentor faculty (see contact list below for more information):
Advanced Materials:
- Dr. Gang Cao, University of Kentucky, Physics Department: gang.cao@uky.edu
Cellular and Molecular Engineering Platforms:
- Dr. Andi Gobin, University of Louisville, Bioengineering: andrea.gobin@louisville.edu
- Dr. Marnie Saunders, University of Kentucky, Biomedical Engineering: marnie.saunders@uky.edu
Micro/Nano Technology:
- Dr. Kevin Walsh, University of Louisville, Speed School: kevin.walsh@louisville.edu
Ecological Genomics:
- Dr. Chris Schardl, University of Kentucky, Plant Pathology: schardl@uky.edu
Economic Development Through Student Research:
- KY NSF EPSCOR: epscor@uky.edu
Environmental Science:
- KY NSF EPSCOR: epscor@uky.edu
KY NSF EPSCoR invites applications for this program year-round. Applications must be submitted by a mentor faculty on the student’s behalf. Application requirements include:
-
Proposal Coversheet: http://www.kynsfepscor.org/funding/cs.pdf (requires Adobe Professional to save edits)
-
Narrative of Proposed Activities (7-page maximum)
-
Budget Justification (3-page maximum)
-
Student Biosketch (2-page maximum)
-
Student qualifications for consideration (e.g., student transcript)
-
Mentor Faculty Biosketch (2-page maximum)
-
A letter of support from one of the faculty representatives listed above.
The coversheet and budget have required templates. These awards are renewable but cannot be transferred to another student once awarded. Applications are reviewed using NSF criteria to search for the best proposed research ideas and students. Awards are granted contingent upon the availability of program funds.
This program is responsive to a special condition of the KY NSF EPSCoR program’s sponsor—the National Science Foundation. Annual reports submitted to NSF must identify the number of women and members of other underrepresented groups participating in the activities funded by the award; as well as the program’s efforts to increase these numbers. The KY NSF EPSCoR program’s future funding is based, in part, on progress in increasing these numbers. The RSP is designed to be a quick-response program. Our goal is to provide faculty/students with an award decision within a few weeks of the proposal submission. A full electronic version of the proposal (which must be a single “PDF” document), must be sent electronically as an email attachment to epscor@uky.edu.
