Hotel Reservations

The Arlington Westin is offering a reduced hotel room rate of $211 per night for October 6-7, 2010 for workshop attendees. This rate is available until September 13, 2010. To receive this reduced rate, attendees must book their hotel reservations online through the following link:

http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/cascepscor

Attendees that need to reserve dates prior to October 6th or stay beyond the 7th should not use this online link. Instead, please book your reservations by calling Arlington Westin contact, Blake Herring, at 703-537-4258.

Travel Scholarships

KY NSF EPSCoR will provide financial support to offset the travel costs of two attendees per EPSCoR jurisdiction. The support will reimburse jurisdictions for the travel costs for plane tickets or mileage (for jurisdictions in driving proximity) and also reimburse for a two night hotel stay for each of the two attendees from each EPSCoR jurisdiction. Other travel/workshop costs will be the responsibility of the attendees and/or their EPSCoR programs.

In order to qualify for travel scholarships the EPSCoR Director/PI in each of the EPSCoR jurisdictions must nominate the two attendees that are to receive the travel scholarships by e-mailing KY NSF EPSCoR (epscor@uky.edu) prior to the workshop no later than September 1, 2010. All travel scholarship recipients must pay for their travel costs and be reimbursed after the workshop. After the workshop, jurisdictional EPSCoR offices must reimburse the individual attendees and then invoice KY NSF EPSCoR for reimbursement of eligible expenses (mentioned above). The invoice from the jurisdictional EPSCoR offices should include:

Workshop History

In October 2007, the NSF sponsored a workshop in Lexington, KY, with the purpose of assessing the state of the cyberinfrastructure in 27 EPSCoR jurisdictions. In that workshop, we examined the difference between the cyberinfrastructure in EPSCoR and non-EPSCoR jurisdictions. The findings showed that there was a significant gap, as measured by networking, access to NSF computational resources, and the number and amount of NSF grants in cyberinfrastructure. One of the results of this workshop was a repository of the cyberinfrastructure resources in each EPSCoR jurisdiction, which can be found at the following link: http://www.kynsfepscor.org/cyber07/cyberppts/.

Plan of Activities

One of the goals of this workshop will be to develop metrics for comparing the quality of cyberinfrastructure in EPSCoR vs. non-EPSCoR jurisdictions. Examples would be the number and capacity of networks, such as listed by Internet2 and NLR, the number and capacity of high performance computational resources such as listed in the top 500 list, the access of researchers to national facilities such as the Teragrid, and the amount of CI funding in each state. Other metrics may arise during the workshop. It has been reported that 80% of cyberinfrastructure funding from NSF originates outside its Office of Cyberinfrastructure.

Targeted Outcomes, Action Items and Follow Up

One of the outcomes of the workshop will be a repository of CI data for each jurisdiction. This will be made available on the public website as soon as submitted. This will be useful for assessing the needs and future plans. The report will summarize the best practices of each jurisdiction in improving and applying their cyberinfrastructure. The report will be disseminated to all EPSCoR's and appropriate policy leaders in the state and federal governments. We will establish a mechanism for updating the data repository.

Evaluation & Feedback

An evaluation form will be distributed and collected at the end of each day during the conference. In addition, the evaluation form will be sent to all participants electronically after the conference to ensure that those who were unable to complete the form onsite will have a second opportunity to provide their input. All comments will be considered and incorporated into future plans as appropriate. The results of the data collected will be included in the workshop report.

In addition, the wrap-up session at the close of the workshop will provide each jurisdiction with the opportunity to provide a synopsis of their CI status and needs for inclusion in a summary of the proposed goals/activities of their CI region as described in “Targeted Outcomes, Action Items and Follow Up” above.

Local Arrangements

Westin Hotel in Arlington is the planned venue for the event. The Westin Hotel is close to the NSF headquarters and will facilitate the participation of government agencies and congressional staff.
