EPSCoR Cyberinfrastructure Assessment Workshop

October 15-16, 2007
Lexington Hyatt Regency
401 West High St., Lexington, KY 40507

The KY NSF EPSCoR is hosting this 1.5 day CI Assessment Workshop and inviting CI experts from the EPSCoR jurisdictions to help develop a collective plan for addressing the “CI gap” as it relates to EPSCoR territories.  The workshop is planned as a successor to last year’s CI workshop in Nashville and a precursor to discussion at the EPSCoR Annual Meeting in November.

There is a significant gap between EPSCoR and non-EPSCoR jurisdictions that is impacting our competitiveness in both research and economic development.  The theme of the workshop will be, "The CI Gap: How big is it and how can we close it?"  We hope to have participation from each EPSCoR jurisdiction and ask that attendees of the workshop be prepared to answer these two questions and prepare a brief presentation regarding their jurisdictional CI needs.  (Please reference the notes at the bottom of the agenda section, below, for additional details.)

We encourage the involvement of representatives from under-represented groups, including those from community colleges, tribal colleges and historically black colleges and universities, for example.  Limited support for subsidizing travel to the conference is available. (More information about travel support is available in the registration section below.)

(Tentative) Agenda:

*We request that each jurisdiction represented at the meeting prepare a few slides to share your CI assessment and needs overview with the group (about 5-10 minutes).  This means we will need to notify you of others coming from your jurisdiction so that you can contact them and work on condensing your presentation.  We anticipate that needs and capabilities will vary but jurisdictional assessment points might include: networking; middleware and applications; high-performance computation; observation and measurement services; interfaces and visualization services; CI workforce assessment; and interaction with tribal and community colleges.  In addition, the participants at the TN meeting identified a number of challenges the EPSCoR jurisdictions face, which participants may want to address during their presentations.  These included: (1) lack of established standards for interoperability in key technologies; (2) the need for entry-level approaches for individual campuses to engage in national CI; and (3) the absence of widely known and well understood CI alternatives in the local area.

Please forward us your presentations by October 3rd to ensure they are included in the packet of conference materials and to minimize transition time between presentations.  Presentations should be mailed to: sysadmin@mx.ccs.uky.edu
